The next nation-wide song and dance celebration – the 12th Youth Song and Dance Celebration will be held at Tallinn Song Festival Grounds and Kalev Central Stadium from 30th June to 2nd July 2017. The participants of the youth celebration are in the age range of 7-27 years.
The performances of the 12th Youth Dance Celebration will take place on 30th June and 1st July 2017. The artistic director of the dance celebration is Mr Margus Toomla.
In the course of three days the 8,000 performers of the dance celebration will give three identical performances. All performances will take place in Tallinn, at Kalev Central Stadium. The audience will watch the performances on the grandstands of the stadium. The number of seats is limited.
The joint procession of the song and dance celebration participants will begin on 2nd July 2017 in the centre of Tallinn and will proceed to Tallinn Song Festival Grounds. The journey from the centre of town to the Song Festival Grounds is about 5 kilometres long and can be followed by everyone without a ticket throughout the whole length of the journey. The procession will be followed by the concert of the song celebration at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds.
The concert of the 12th Youth Song Celebration will take place on 2nd July 2017. The artistic director of the song celebration is Mrs Heli Jürgenson. The concert begins with joint choirs of about 20 000 performers. The audience needs to purchase tickets to listen to the concert.
The ticket sales will start in the beginning of 2017. Information about the ticket sales will be published on our homepage and Facebook page. Several types of tickets can be purchased for the song celebration concerts. The first rows are equipped with individual seats. The rows behind these are equipped with benches and the area behind the benches – the biggest area of the song festival grounds – is for those who buy a general admission ticket. The prices of the song and dance celebration tickets range from 10 to 25 Euros. Tickets are available online, at Piletilevi and at the gates of Song Festival Grounds.
The performances and concerts of the song and dance celebration are held in the open air regardless of weather conditions. Considering the changing nature of the weather in Estonia, please be prepared both for very hot and sunny weather as well as for wind and rain. Umbrellas are not allowed at the song and dance celebration performances, so please wear suitable clothes and take along a raincoat, just in case.
Song and dance celebrations are an old and very important tradition for Estonia and Estonians. The first song celebration took place in 1869 and the first dance celebration in 1934. In Estonia we have four nation-wide song and dance celebrations in the course of every ten years: every 2nd and 7th year of the decade a youth song and dance celebration and every 4th and 9th year of the decade a general song and dance celebration. In 2003 the tradition of song and dance celebrations was entered to UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
